Mitochondrial diseases are caused by genetic defects in the function of mitochondria, subcellular organelles involved in the production of energy from food-derived fuels and oxygen. Mitochondrial diseases therefore often affect tissues with a high energy demand, including the heart, central nervous system and muscles. WT501 is active in models of mitochondrial diseases, regardless of the specific molecular defect in the mitochondrial respiratory chain, and has been provided to a limited number of patients on a compassionate use basis. Clinical trials for this indication are planned.
WT501 is also active in models of Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s, and Parkinson’s diseases, which all involve mitochondrial dysfunction as a key feature in their pathogenesis. This investigational compound may address the metabolic dysfunction that is a commonly shared factor in the pathology of these disorders.
